This is a great question. There are approximately 567 different answers to the question (okay— maybe I’m being a little dramatic). I’ll give you my answer to this, but first I want to emphasize that Social Media Management (SMM) isn’t something that’s done on it’s own. It’s part of a bigger strategy that social media roadmaphopefully your business is actively engaging in which is …marketing strategy. Social media is just one component of marketing strategy. 

SMM is a relatively new concept as it pertains to marketing. Think about it!  Just 10 years ago in July 2009 Facebook reported 250 million users.  In March 2019 (drum roll please) 2.38 BILLION users. I am not a mathematician, but I think this exponential growth, don’t you?  With so many users on just this single platform, it is a no-brainer that we want to be active and engaged!  

Here is my point. The growth of social media as a communication and marketing tool has risen quickly. It is still a bit like the wild wild west in terms of “how” to use it, “when” to use it, and “why” to use it. The other “how” folds into your overall marketing strategy. Best practices and social media trends change very quickly, and as a business owner, or marketing professional, it can be cumbersome at times (most of the time) to keep up with social media engagement, posting, analytics, and monitoring not just one platform but 2, 3 or more!

So. Maybe you don’t like social media and aren’t quite sure how it folds into your overall strategy. Maybe you want to keep social media “social”. Maybe you aren’t interested in social media, but for your business’ sake, you know you should!  Insert me – a social media manager!
